New Paper on Optimal Control Modeling for Traffic Evacuation

A new paper by Yanglan Wang, Maria Laura Delle Monache, and Kenichi Soga, titled Modeling and Optimization of Traffic Evacuation Using Optimal Control Model,” appears in connection with the 2025 IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems.

The study develops an optimal control framework for traffic evacuation, with the goal of minimizing total travel time while satisfying flow and density constraints. The model is applied to a wildfire evacuation scenario in Inverness, California, where evacuation must occur through limited road infrastructure.

This work contributes to evacuation modeling by combining traffic flow theory, optimal control, and infrastructure resilience. It supports the development of more effective evacuation strategies for communities exposed to wildfire and other hazards.
