Distributed Acoustic Sensing of Shallow Landslides: Geophysical Evaluation of Failure Planes

A collaborative effort between researchers from Lawrence Berkeley Lab (Anne Voigtländer, Li-Wei Chen) and UC Berkeley (Connor Geudeker, Taka’aki Taira, Robert Kayen) is underway looking at the evaluation and monitoring of shallow landslides. Initial collection of active data using distributed acoustic sensing and geophones was completed April 14th, 2025. Interested in the potential variability of interpretation, multiple participants were invited to generate an active signal using the traditional sledgehammer approach. A shaker apparatus was used to generate a controlled signal to compare with the aforementioned approach. A poster of initial results was presented by Anne Voigtländer at the Seismological Society of America’s Environmental Seismology: Earth’s Surface and Subsurface Hazards, Dynamics and Resources Oct. 14th-18th, 2025 (Poster 29). A portion of the fiber optic results are highlighted with the figures below.
