Collaborative Research Driving the Future of Infrastructure Resiliency

The November 2025 issue of Municipal Sewer and Water includes the article “A New Approach to Infrastructure Resiliency” which features the benefits of partnerships between academic researchers at the Berkeley Center for Smart Infrastructure (CSI), utilities, and manufacturers. These different vested parties can be aligned so that informed decisions can be made to deploy innovative and adaptive infrastructure. The collaborations also accelerate evidence-based decision making and deployment.

Specifically, to address “big picture” and long-term challenges, EBMUD leveraged CSI’s research and testing capabilities to the most pressing issues they face. “CSI allows academics, utility and infrastructure owners, and equipment manufacturers to come together and say, ‘these are the important topics,’” notes Professor Kenichi Soga, CSI Director.
